Bake of the Week - Scones
The afternoon tea favourite is a favourite of ours too!

Scones are one of the earliest recorded bakes around with written mentions going back to the 14th century. Some say the name derives from the ancient Scottish seat of Scone, others from Dutch schoonbrood (pure bread)

That's not the only argument! Being from Norfolk, we couldn't possibly comment on the cultural divide between Devon and Cornwall as to whether the cream goes on before or after the jam. Neither are we willing to dictate the pronunciation!

Whatever the differences, our opinion is that there's nothing better that a freshly baked scone which is why we get up early on market day to bake scones for sale the same day. Fruit scones, plain scones and cheese scones are our regulars on the table, and always sell well.

I asked the maid in dulcet tone,
To order me a buttered scone;
The silly girl has been and gone
And ordered me a buttered scone!
